How to save iPhone battery life?

If you own an iPhone, probably you also do a lot of things on it, including checking mails, music, chatting, surfing etc etc. However, it's iPhone battery life that leaves us so scared that we think twice before checking our mail if we are not close to a charger.

Here are a few tips that will help you increase iPhone battery life. You might want to save a link to this page as I would be adding more tips in the future...

1. Avoid Location Based services
GPS sucks a lot of battery. Avoid or don't allow applications to use Location Services as far as possible.

2. Keep that brightness level under control
Goto Settings>Brightness and adjust brightness to the minimum level required. Also, keep auto-brightness on.

3. Make use of Shortcut keys
There are three things you should do to not only save battery life but also make your work a little more easier with iPhone

Arrange your Home Screen icons so that your most frequently used icons are on 1st home screen and closer to bottom (that is where your thumb/finger reaches fastest)

Goto Settings>General>Home Button and set double click on home button to take you to favourites. Have all the frequently dialed numbers in your fav list. So whenever you need to call, double click on home screen and dial. (If this feature is on, you can actually have some other icon instead of Phone on dock, as double click takes you there)

When listening to music on headset, use the button on mic. (Yep, there is a button there.. just try pressing your mic). Single Click: Play/Pause (it even switches ON your iPod application). Double Click: Next Track. Triple Click: Previous Track

4. Turn off Wi-fi, Bluetooth, 3G when not in use
The only place I use Wi-fi is at home. So when I am leaving home, I disable Wi-fi from Settings and enable it when I am back. It saves a lot of battery. Similarly keep Bluetooth and 3G off when not in use.

5. Lock it when you are done with it
When you are done using your iPhone, just press the power button on top once and screen is automatically locked. Common, but useful.

6. Fetch new data less frequently
Applications such as Mail can be set to fetch data wirelessly at specific intervals. The more frequently email or other data is fetched, the quicker your battery may drain. To fetch new data manually, from the Home screen choose Settings > Fetch New Data and tap Manually. To increase the fetch interval, go to Settings > Fetch New Data and tap Hourly. Note that this is a global setting and applies to all applications that do not support push services.

7. Turn off push mail if you don't need it
If you have a push mail account such as Yahoo!, MobileMe or Microsoft Exchange, turn off push mail when you don’t need it. Go to Settings > Fetch New Data and set Push to Off. Messages sent to your push email accounts will now be received on your phone based on the global Fetch setting rather than as they arrive.

What is EvDO technology?
EvDO or Evolution Data Only / Evolution Data Optimized is a 3G technology for CDMA networks. It has the capability to offer high speed internet access on te go.

Is it really 3.1 Mbps?
Depends. On the signal strength, distance from EvDO tower and probably the number of users connected to the same cell site. You can expect very good speeds if the EvDO tower is within 2-3 km radius.

What is there is no EvDO coverage where you are traveling?
In that case your card will automatically connect to CDMA 1x with lower speed. However, you can expect to be connected everywhere.

Any alternate?
Yes, BSNL has been offering EvDO for some time now. Infact with a monthly charge of Rs. 550 (+ service tax) for unlimited usage. Even TATA Indicom is scheduled to launch EvDO this year itself. Apart from this 3G on GSM would be in India soon too. (3G comes to India)

Both India and Pakistan have a lot of things in common. After every terror attack in India or Pakistan, a series of blame game, face saving exercises and media drama begins... India is blamed for attacks in Pakistan and Pakistan is blamed for attacks in India.
India claims Pakistan's ISI for supporting terrorism. Pakistan claims India's RAW is behind attacks. But what is the truth? Why a state wants to sponsor terrorist attacks on another country when it itself is fighting with terrorism? Who is behind all this? Who gives them money?

Is there a possibility that a third party is involved and fooling both the countries?

Few months back when my best friend shifted to New York, I realised how painful ISD bills can be. Then began my hunt for ways of calling US, then for cheap calls and then for free calls...

Getting ISD on your mobile:

I am an old customer of Vodafone, so it wasn't a problem to activate ISD on that. However, I guess if you are a new customer, you might need to pay a security deposit. I also have a BPL connection but they refused to activate ISD without additional deposit. I have heard Idea in Mumbai just needs a deposit of Rs. 1000 to activate ISD.

And of course, it is pre-activated on prepaid cards.

But ISD Costs a lot:

Yes, Rs.6.40 per minute to USA. And if you are used to talking for hours, it's going to make a significant dent in your pocket. But there's a cool alternative...

Call to US for Rs. 1.99 per minute:

Answer is ISD cards on your existing mobile... These cards are available in various denominations. You can buy a card for Rs. 2500 and can make calls to US for Rs. 1.99 per minute or Rs.2.99 on Rs.700 card. These cards are available with all major operators (Vodafone World Calling Cards, Airtel International Calling Cards, Idea Global Calling Card). Operators of yesterday like BPL don't have any such card (and many other features).

PS: You have to buy this card from your mobile operator. You can't use Airtel card on Vodafone and so on...

PC to PC free calls:

Well, if you have good internet connections on both sides, you can make free calls from Net. Google Talk and Skype are two services with good voice quality.

Unlimited Calls to US Landlines and mobiles for Rs.280 per month:
